Stay Cool & Sleep Better

Stay Cool & Sleep Better

When the temperatures rise, so can the challenges of sleeping with a CPAP machine. Heat, humidity, and travel can throw off your sleep routine—but with a few smart tips, you can stay cool, comfortable, and compliant all summer long.

1. Switch to a Lighter Mask
Summer heat can make full-face masks feel stuffy. If your prescription allows, consider switching to a nasal or nasal pillow mask. These lighter options offer less facial coverage and improved airflow—perfect for warmer nights.

2. Adjust Your Humidifier Settings
High humidity outside might mean you need less humidification inside. If your CPAP includes a humidifier, experiment with lowering the setting or turning it off. Over-humidification in summer can cause excess condensation (a.k.a. “rainout”) in your tubing.

3. Use a Heated Tube or Tube Cover
To reduce rainout caused by the clash between cool indoor AC and warm, humid air, try a heated tube or a tube wrap. These help keep temperatures consistent, so you don’t wake up to water droplets in your mask.

4. Keep Your Machine Cool
Avoid placing your CPAP near windows or vents that might expose it to direct sunlight or heat. Machines work best at room temperature, so store and run yours in a cool, shaded space

5. Stay on Track During Travel
Whether you're camping or catching flights, bring your CPAP! Use portable CPAP options like the Transcend Micro or travel-friendly battery backups. Don’t forget adapters or solar chargers if you're going off-grid.

6. Keep It Clean
Warm weather means more sweat, oil, and allergens. Summer is a great time to clean your mask and tubing more frequently to prevent buildup and maintain performance. Try cleaning your equipment with wipes specifically designed for CPAP daily and use a mild soap or a CPAP soap for a more deep clean.

7. Stay Hydrated!
CPAP use, especially with a humidifier, can be drying—drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and help your airways stay comfortable overnight.

Summer doesn’t have to disrupt your CPAP therapy. With a few adjustments, you can stay cool, sleep better, and enjoy a healthier season.
